A key member of La Salle's heralded defensive backfield this season was senior Devonta Smith, who was just named first team SWO District Div. II-Defense. His junior year, Devonta helped the Lancers sweep through the GCL South schedule, then roll through the playoffs on the way to the program's fourth Ohio state championship. This past season, the Lancers went 8-3 and were regional champs and a Div. II state semifinalist.

Devonta entered his senior season with some nice preseason recognition. MaxPreps named him preseason first team all-Ohio, Sports Illustrated put him on its preseason High School All-American Watch List and he was named preseason 1st team all-tri-state area by Tri-StateFootball.com.

A force on both sides of the ball, Devonta last year as a defensive back had 72 solo tackles, five interceptions and two forced fumbles, while on offense as a wide receiver he caught 11 passes for 271 yards and five scores. He was named GCL South All-Purpose Player of the Year, first-team all-Southwest Ohio District and third-team All-Ohio Div. II.

A good student (National Honor Society) who is active in community service, Devonta also ran track for the Lancers as a freshman and sophomore. He will play football collegiately at the University of Alabama.

His favorite athlete is Minkah Fitzpatrick, favorite entertainers are Lil Durk/Baby Face Ray, favorite book is Diary of a Wimpy Kid, favorite movie is Planet of the Apes, and most-like-to-meet is NBA YoungBoy.

COACH'S QUOTE – "Devonta is an outstanding young man, on and off the field. He has overcome tremendous adversity in life and is stronger because of it. His future is very bright and I can't wait to see what he accomplishes this year and beyond!"
— Pat McLaughlin, Football Coach
