The Covid pandemic wiped out her junior season, but Boone County all-star softball player Karys Black is back with the Lady Rebels for her senior season, and the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association named her as the preseason top player in the ninth region this year. She is a multi-talented player who has played pitcher, third base, shortstop and outfield in her career. Karys started this season strong -- she pitched a no-hit shutout against Gallatin County in a 10-0 win with 17 strikeouts in the six-inning game. She also struck out 10 batters in a 6-inning loss to Oldham County.

Her senior year so far has produced formidable numbers. She is hitting a robust .492 with 10 homeruns and 31 RBI. In one streak, she hit a homerun in five straight games, entering the state record books. In 49 innings pitched, she has struck out 71 batters with a 4.29 ERA.

Karys, who has been playing varsity since the eighth grade and at one time was an award-winning gymnast, had an extremely productive sophomore softball season, when she went 19-4 in the circle with 173 strikeouts and a 1.93 ERA.

She was also one of the most productive hitters on the team with a .416 batting average with 13 home runs and 40 RBI. She finished 18th in the state for homeruns, 23rd in the state for wins. She was named first team all-NKAC by the coaches and first team all-Northern Kentucky by the Enquirer. She was also named to the 33rd District all-tournament team.

A 4.0 student who is active in community service, Karys also plays for a club team, Team Kentucky 18U Roark. She will play softball collegiately at the University of West Alabama (Div. II) in Livingston, Alabama.

Her favorite athlete is Crystl Bustos, favorite entertainer is Morgan Wallen, favorite Movie is Land of the Lost and most like to meet is "my maternal grandmother, who passed away before I was born."
