One of the state's top basketball players in the 2016 class, senior point guard Nia Staples is a 4-year varsity player for the Lakota West Firebirds. She got off to a strong start this season in leading the Firebirds to a win vs. Mason, scoring a career-high 26 points while leading the team in rebounds (six), assists (five) and steals (four). She followed this up by scoring 20 points in a win vs. Mt. Notre Dame.

Nia last season averaged 10.4 points, 2.5 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in helping the team go 28-2 and win their first-ever Ohio state championship. The 28 wins in a season set a school record. Her top scoring outputs were vs. Fairfield (20 points), McAuley (20 points in a regional semi-final win), Fairmont (17) and Oak Hills (17).

Her accomplishments were recognized with numerous honors. She was 1st team all-GMC, 1st team all-city (Enquirer) and 3rd team SWO District. In 2014 she also was a player on the U16 National Girls' USA Team.

Active in community service, Nia has committed to play collegiately at the University of West Virginia.
