Mason senior J.P. Sponseller is one of the area's best baseball players on one of the city's top teams. A three-year varsity starter for the Mason Comets, J.P. is a Prep Baseball Report preseason all-state performer. He is one of the top hitters in the GMC, batting .414.

Playing left field and first base, J.P. entered his senior season on the heals of an impressive junior campaign when he helped lead the Comets to their first outright GMC championship since 2013 with a 26-6 over all season record and a 16-2 mark inside the conference. The Comets were also regional champs and made it to the Ohio state Final Four in the state tournament.

His junior year, J.P. hit .404 with 33 RBI (second in the GMC), seven doubles, two triples and five home runs. He had an on-base percentage of .495. Top games included versus St Xavier (3-4, grand slam, 5 RBI), Oak Hills (2-3, HR, BB, 4 RBI) and Lakota East (2-4, 2B, HR, 5 RBI).

J.P. earned numerous honors, including being named GMC Co-Player of the Year, first team all-conference, first team all-city and first team all-state. He was 2nd team all-USA-Ohio by USA Today and American Family Insurance.

A good student, J.P. will continue his baseball play collegiately at Elon University in North Carolina. His favorite athlete is Joc Pederson, favorite entertainer is G-Eazy, favorite book is The Hobbit, favorite movie is The Dark Knight and most-like-to-meet is Floyd Mayweather.
